The ranch was located on a portion of the Mexican Land Grant known as the Nolan Land Grant. Located just west of the city of Pueblo, Colorado, the ranch once included frontage on the Arkansas River and included lush grazing land to the west and the south. It was designed to be Goodnight’s home ranch. Here he built his barn, home and all the outbuildings necessary for a large ranch. The Barn is the only building still standing on the property.
The Goodnight-Loving Trail left Fort Belknap, Texas and followed a backwards “J”, west towards the Pecos River and then north to Ft. Sumner and farther north to Wyoming. The “J” was chosen to avoid Comanche raiding parties. It was still dangerous, lengthy and, in most cases, dry.
